Powys practical guide

Hospitals and your work base

An introduction to the local hospital network, with reliable starting points for finding your site and preparing for arrival.

A rural health board

Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) serves communities across a large rural area of Wales. Its hospitals and community services work alongside services provided outside the county. Your base, travel requirements and referral arrangements should be clarified for your own post.

This guide focuses on Newtown, Llandrindod Wells and Brecon. The wider PTHB directory also covers other locations, including Welshpool, Machynlleth, Knighton and Ystradgynlais.

Use the current hospital information

The official site pages contain directions, facilities and service information. Read current notices before visiting; the presence of a hospital does not mean every investigation or urgent-care service is available there at all times.

Workforce proposals and consultations are not the same as implemented arrangements. Confirm the current arrangements through your employing team.

Questions for your recruiting team

Resolve these before your first day, especially if you work across more than one site.

  • What is my contractual base, and which other sites will I cover?
  • Where should I report, at what time, and who will meet me?
  • Which induction, IT, identity-card and occupational-health steps must be completed?
  • Who is my clinical supervisor or named senior contact?
  • Where are the approved local clinical pathways and escalation arrangements?
  • Are parking arrangements, travel expenses or relocation support available for my post?
