Powys practical guide

Transport and commuting

Bus and rail starting points, and a practical approach to commuting between rural communities and hospital sites.

Bus links between the three towns

The T4 route runs between Newtown and Merthyr Tydfil via Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells and Brecon. Use its current timetable and service notices to check your particular stop and date.

A route serving your town may not fit your shift. Check the first arrival, last return, weekends and bank holidays, plus the walk between the stop and your workplace.

Rail and connecting journeys

Newtown and Llandrindod have railway stations. Use the station pages for current facilities and services, then plan the final leg to the hospital. For Brecon, include any onward bus or car connection in your journey plan.

Before choosing your commute

Try the journey at a realistic time if possible. Rural roads, weather, roadworks and connections can make a short distance take longer than expected.

  • Confirm the exact hospital entrance and parking arrangements.
  • Check the return journey after your latest expected finish.
  • Have a practical backup for cancellations or unexpected late working.
  • Discuss travel between sites and expense arrangements with your employer.
  • If driving for work, check the relevant insurance and employer requirements.
